Mind Body Therapy

What is mind-body therapy?

Mind-body therapy is a way to help you find calmness and to rebalance your emotions whilst facing breast cancer and its treatments. The techniques and skills used in these sessions include meditation, visualisation, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Sedona Method, Thought Field Therapy (TFT) or Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Hypnotherapy and Life Coaching. All these tools work with the mind to positively effect mind and body and can have a positive effect during and beyond breast cancer treatment. Mind-body therapy also explores the significance of making changes that will ensure maximum nourishment and well being for the long-term future.

How can mind-body therapy help?

The aim of the mind-body therapy session is to significantly reduce whatever trauma or emotional distress you are experiencing when you walk through the door. The aim is to help you to leave the session much more peaceful, happier or hopeful. You also leave with practical tips and techniques that you can use in order to keep your emotional state balanced.

These sessions are very relevant in all situations related to breast cancer as the diagnosis alone can bring feelings of fear, uncertainty, sadness, disappointment and regret. These are the most important areas to work with as frequently they contribute to not being able to sleep, constant feelings of anxiety, being unable to enjoy time with family or even take good care of yourself.

This therapy has proved to be very useful in dealing with fears and losses of all kinds including the fear of cancer coming back, the fear of death, fear of surgery, losing hair, issues of femininity and attractiveness, and worrying about family and friends.

Benefits can include:

increased sense of peace and confidence

reduction in stress, fear and other negative emotions

more clarity about life choices and directions

deepened sense of well being

improved relationships with oneself and others

more acceptance of oneself

deeper nourishment of the whole person

What happens in the sessions?

At the beginning of the first session feelings that are the most intense and upsetting for you at that moment will be identified. Often the first session is focused on letting go, releasing, accepting, embracing, so that you can leave feeling much more peaceful. The emotions with which you are having most difficulty will be worked through during the follow up sessions.

When is it appropriate to have mind-body therapy?

You can participate in mind-body therapy at any stage of breast cancer and its treatments. It is usually advised to have counselling and mind-body therapy sequentially rather than concurrently so as not to overwhelm you with too many different approaches at once. It is best not to have it when feeling too exhausted, as you will need to be able to concentrate.

What are the number and length of sessions?

Each session lasts about an hour and a half. On average, the help needed can take from one to three sessions.
