What is a lymphoedema awareness class?
The lymphoedema awareness class aims to enhance your understanding what lymphoedema is and the risks of developing lymphoedema after diagnosis of and treatment for breast cancer. It goes on to teach good self-care practices to minimise risks.
What happens in a lymphoedema class?
The class runs for one and a half hours and is split into two parts.
During the first part the group leader explains what lymphoedema is, discusses the risks of developing lymphoedema after breast cancer treatment and steps you can take to minimise risks. In the second part exercises are demonstrated and you can practice the exercise routine as laid out in the Breast Cancer Haven’s ‘Lymphoedema awareness: reducing your risk’ DVD.
When can a lymphoedema class be taken?
A lymphoedema class can be taken at any time for education; the exercises can be performed six to eight weeks following surgery.
Number of sessions
Usually attending one session is enough backed up with the DVD and/or written handouts.
Safety Issues
There should be no risks. During the exercise routine, you are advised to take each movement slowly and steadily and not to push beyond the range of existing movement of the affected arm. If you have lymphoedema, you are advised to wear a compression sleeve during the exercise routine to support the affected limb and to help maximise on the benefits of exercise.
