About us Who we are Our people in HQ Dr Barbara Baker BSc, PhD – Senior Research Fellow Dr Barbara Baker graduated with a 1st Class BSc Honours degree in Biochemistry in 1977, and was awarded a PhD in Biochemistry/Microbiology in 1981. Barbara was a Lecturer at Imperial College, London for ten years, heading a small research group investigating the immunopathogenesis of psoriasis. After almost 23 years of research in the field of Immunodermatology, she has published 70 papers and written three books on the subject, two of which she has self-published. Barbara joined The Haven as Senior Research Fellow in April 2006. Barbara’s main interest is to understand, from an immunological perspective, the mechanisms involved in the improvement of the quality of life of women with breast cancer when complementary therapies are integrated with standard medical treatment. Barbara held the title of Visiting Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Healthcare, Faculty of Medicine and Health has been conferred at the University of Leeds for a period of two years from March 2008 to 2010. Deborah Slaughter – Marketing Manager Deborah has worked in marketing for twenty years and joined The Haven in 2007 bringing with her skills in marketing for both profit-making and not-for-profit organisations. She has worked as the Marketing Manager for organisations such as Language Line Ltd, The Department for Education, The Housing Corporation and The Department for Constitutional Affairs and when not working she enjoys spending time with her three small (and very noisy) children and visiting North Yorkshire where she grew up. Amy Littleton - Relationships Manager Amy brings experience of working in charity fundraising and CSR management to her role as Relationships Manager at Breast Cancer Haven. Outside of work, her interests involve playing roller derby and drawing. Laura Hignett - Committed Giving and Legacies Senior OfficerLaura joined The Haven October 2015 as Committed Giving & Legacies Senior Officer. She has previously worked in the Welsh Assembly as a Press Officer for an MP and as a freelance journalist writing articles for Prima Baby, More, BBC See Hear and featured on live news programmes. She joined the charity sector six years ago and has previously worked for Skill, Action on Hearing Loss and RNIB. Laura has a broad experience of fundraising particularly in legacies. When not working Laura enjoys jetting off to hot places, going to the beach and spending time with her little daughter. Craig Simmonds - Communications Officer Shortly after graduating from university in May 2015, Craig joined the charity sector as a marketing intern for Orpheus specialist college for disabled people. Integrating experience from this internship and skills developed on his photojournalism degree, Craig joined Breast Cancer Haven as Communications Officer in August 2016. Liz Nash – Volunteering Officer Liz joined the Haven in February 2017, and brings over 8 years of experience in Volunteer Management, most recently at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. Originally from the USA where she worked as a Pregnancy and Adoptions Counsellor, Liz started her career in the UK voluntary sector as a Youth Worker before taking a position at a borough Volunteer Centre. She not only enjoys supporting volunteers, but has also been a volunteer herself for various organisations including Mind, Brent Council, and the Seychelles National Parks Authority (where she lived for a month on an uninhabited island taking part in various conservation projects). Liz spent the majority of 2016 travelling around Europe, Southeast Asia and Australia, and the experience has only made her travel wishlist longer! She is looking forward to helping grow and develop the organisation’s volunteering program, so we can ultimately support more people affected by breast cancer. Carmen Loftus - Senior HR Advisor Carmen has been with Breast Cancer Haven since November 2013. Her background is in the non-profit sector, having worked at British Red Cross and St Christopher's Fellowship. Charlie O’Doherty, Trusts and Foundations Manager Charlie joined Breast Cancer Haven in 2015. He began his career supporting young people with mental health and substance abuse needs at West London YMCA. He possesses a wide range of income sources experience including the Home Office, Connexions, Big Lottery, Comic Relief and the Department of Health. Previously he worked with the NSPCC, Mind and in overseas development with Excellent Development. He is a graduate in English Literature from the University of London. When not at work he’s kept busy with his wife and three daughters, and also a member of the Institute of English’s James Joyce Reading Group.
