What is counselling?

Counselling gives you an opportunity to receive emotional support and learn practical ways to deal with the effects of living with breast cancer. You may feel shocked and uncertain, be frightened or worried about the future. You may feel stressed trying to cope, not only with breast cancer, but also with other everyday challenges including issues to do with relationships and work. Talking to our highly experienced counsellors gives you emotional and practical support when you need it most.

Counselling for people close to you

A short course of counselling is also available for anyone close to you who needs emotional support. This is provided free and in addition to any help we give you. Please speak to our front desk  team for further information.

What can counselling help with?

78% of our visitors want emotional support from us and our service evaluation finds it to be very helpful. Counselling allows time for you to be heard and can help you express your thoughts and feelings. It can help you find your own solutions to problems. It can also help with accepting what cannot be changed. Difficulties in talking with family and friends about breast cancer are common. Counselling can help you find more effective ways of communicating. 

There is research evidence to show that counselling can help you cope better, reduce stress and improve your quality of life following a diagnosis of cancer. Counselling can help relieve depression, anxiety and other kinds of distress in people living with cancer.

Appointment Information

A course of counselling is usually recommended. Each counselling session lasts 50 minutes. The counsellor will advise on the number and frequency of counselling appointments following the first session. Counselling can be helpful at any time following a breast cancer diagnosis. If you are unable to attend a session in person it is possible to arrange an appointment by phone or Skype. If you are feeling very weak physically, it may be better to postpone your appointment until you feel a bit stronger.
