In 2006 aged 32 I heard those 3 little words no girl wants to hear, you’ve got cancer. I heard those words again in 2014.
This year Breast Cancer Haven Yorkshire (based in Leeds) will be 10 years old. It would have been so beneficial if it had been open when I received my 1st diagnosis.
I have attended Breast Cancer Haven for 3 years and their approach and structured personalised program has supported me and helped me regain my strength. I have also experienced the social side of Haven and forged new friendships through adversity. A non-medical environment and access to a safe space to discuss issues is invaluable.
I am taking part in the fashion show as my way of giving back, due to neoadjuvant therapies causing heart damage and joint problems more physical challenges are not possible for me. I am collecting donations for Breast Cancer Haven which will be put to good use.
Breast Cancer Haven provides free emotional, physical and practical support to anyone affected by breast cancer, from its centres across the country. The monetary value of this support is £1,000, per visitor. One in eight women are at risk of developing breast cancer in their life-time and around 50.000 are diagnosed each year. (Charity Number 1061726) To find out more about what Breast Cancer Haven does and hear from some of their visitors, search https://www.breastcancerhaven.org.uk/
