What is herbal medicine?

Herbal medicine is the oldest form of natural medicine. It comes from using whole plants. The benefits come from the natural balance of the different chemical constituents within the plant, some of which are found in everyday foods. Herbal medicines focus on you as a person as well as your current symptoms. Herbal remedies may be taken as teas, tinctures, tablets or skin preparations. Our experienced medical herbalists only recommend whatever is safe to be taken alongside your current medical treatments for breast cancer. We do not recommend taking herbal preparations unless they have been given to you by a qualified medical herbalist.

What can herbal medicine help with?

Research indicates that herbal remedies may help with depression and anxiety, difficulty sleeping, nausea, skin problems from radiotherapy and menopausal symptoms. In our service evaluation our visitors said herbal medicine helped them to feel very much better and take more control. Our medical herbalists know the herbs can help with side effects from breast cancer treatments and can advise you on foods that will support you too.

Treatment Information

A minimum of three herbal medicine appointments is recommended. The first appointment takes up to one hour so that your health needs can be fully understood. The medical herbalist will advise when she would like to see you for a follow up. Half-hour follow-up appointments are usually at least one month apart.

You will need to bring details of any medications, supplements and other remedies that you are currently taking.

Herbal remedies are normally dispensed the following day and can either be posted to you or available to collect the next time you attend Breast Cancer Haven.

Whilst the appointment is provided free there is a charge for the remedies.
