MBSR. 8-week course

Mindfulness is a way of learning to relate directly to whatever is happening in your life, a way of taking charge of your life, of doing something for yourself and consciously and systematically working with your own stress, pain, illness and the challenging demands of everyday life.

Research has shown that people who complete the Stress Reduction Programme report:

  • An ability to cope more effectively with short- and long-term stressful situations

  • An increased ability to relax and feel calm

  • Greater energy and enthusiasm for life

  • Lasting decreases in a range of physical and psychological symptoms including stress, anxiety, depression, fatigue and menopausal symptoms

  • Reductions in pain levels and an enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain

People participate on the course for many reasons including:

  • Stress from various causes

  • Illnesses including cancer

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Sleep disturbances or fatigue

  • A general feeling of life being out of control or just not feeling quite right

  • Wanting to connect with our innate inner sense of peace and calm

  • Many do the programme because they feel the pace of their life is “out of control” or they are “just not quite feeling right”.

The course consists of eight weeks of two hour morning or evening classes and one day-long class on a Saturday. This is a life-affirming course which is highly participatory and practical and includes:

  • Guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices

  • Mindful gentle stretching exercises

  • Enquiry exercises to enhance awareness of everyday life

  • Individually tailored instructions

  • Group dialogue

  • Daily home practice

  • Four audio CDs to support home practice

  • A course workbook and home practice sheets

  • The course is both challenging and life-affirming. The instructors are especially trained to create a safe, supportive and deeply engaging learning environment.
